What kind of wheels should I use for this course?

Postby Statman on Tue Jan 06, 2009 10:50 pm

What kind of wheels should I use for this course, if the winds are low? I average below 18 mph, so after reading this and that recommendation – does it help to have a disc wheel? A disc wheel may be too heavy for me for this course, especially with all the turns, but I would like to get an opinion from one of the many triathletes that are far more bike tech savvy than I am. Thanks!

The interesting this about this course is that a lot of the wind is shielded by buildings, but again can depend on fast you are really biking. There are usually a lot of disc wheels out there. But, I would recommend using one if you're not averaging more than say 17/18. Also depends on what disc wheel you have if you have one... Some of the newer ones are actually pretty light compared to some of the older models that will add a pounds. If questioning it a lot, I would recommend going with a light set of spoke wheels.

Don't consider a disc at 18~mph. If you want to get high tech and spend some dough get one of the very light wheels with very few spokes. What do you weigh? How tall are you? Is your weight proportionate to your height (power to weight ratio).

Good luck at CapTex!
